my mother made suet pastry pie, it was my father's favourite. He was as thin as a nail. Today it is her little daughter who remembers this good pie and she wants to know the recipe to make it, I'm glad I did research and found the suet pastry, pie recipe.
This recipe has been part of our culinary heritage for at least 100 years. You can make it with grapes or walnuts.
Preheat the oven to 400 F
What you need to make suet pastry
- 1 uncooked pie crust
- 1/4 cup chopped tallow (beef fat)
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
- 2 sliced apples
- 1/2 cup raisins (or walnuts)
- 1 tsp white vinegar
How to prepare suet pastry
Line the bottom of a pie pan with pie crust
In a bowl, mix tallow, brown sugar, apple slices, grapes and vinegar
Place in the bottom of the uncooked pastry
Bake 10 minutes in an oven preheated to 400 F
Reduce heat to 350 F
Continue cooking for 30 to 45 minutes.
Serve hot
